Birmingham-based Controlled Scaffolding has successfully accessed job candidates and welcomed four recruits through a training programme delivered by Construction College Midlands (CCM).

The Construction Gateway Programme in conjunction with the West Midlands Combined Authority saw local jobseekers complete four weeks of trade-specific training before being interviewed by Controlled Scaffolding in line with their existing vacancies.

As a result, the company has taken on a labourer/driver and three trainee scaffolders. Their training included an overview of construction health & safety and completing a Construction Operatives Training Scheme (CISRS) course, along with an overview of scaffolding terminology, equipment, procedures and processes.

Gerard Kelly, Contracts Director at Controlled Scaffolding said: “We’re one of many companies that has faced barriers to recruitment. This process is more effective for us with the input of agencies and training providers like CCM.

“They do the legwork, including vetting applicants, promoting the benefits of working in this industry and teaching the foundation skills and professional standards that can bring new workers on site who we know will be enthusiastic and reliable.”

With many of Controlled Scaffolding’s workforce possessing between 10 and 20 years of experience, including eight years with Gerard, he also welcomes the opportunity for his colleagues to support the progress of new employees.

He added: “We have a good team who get on well together. With fresh minds for our experienced scaffolders to nurture and trainees that can give updates to working practices, we have consistency across our quality and service standards.”
